Athletes congratulating each other on Xcellerator swim starting blocks

Competitive vs. Recreational Starting Blocks

Among all the starting block options available, there are two distinct types:
Competitive and Recreational.

Competitive and Recreational blocks differ in both design and functionality, and we are here to assist you in determining the best fit for your facility.

competitive Swim starting blocks

Competitive Starting Blocks are the most popular blocks and are more advanced and adjustable than recreational ones. They are installed at competitive pools and allow swimmers better foot and hand placement based on their individual preferences.

To provide a more streamlined and powerful entry into the pool, competitive blocks come equipped with features such as a backstroke handgrip bar, backfoot wedges, or a track start system that ensures secure footing at optimal angles.

Our Xcellerator, Record Breaker, and Fusion starting blocks are constructed of high-quality US stainless steel with a superior nonslip surface, guaranteeing absolute stability and confidence for every athlete. All of our competitive starting blocks are fully compliant with World Aquatics, USA, NCAA Swimming, and the NFHS.

Recreational Swim starting blocks

Recreational Starting Blocks offer straightforward functionality compared to their competitive counterparts. They may not have the same level of adjustability or features, but they are cost-efficient and a reliable training option.

Recreational blocks often have a basic design with a flat and molded plastic surface. These blocks make a great option for training facilities, local pools, and HOA swim teams.

Our Bighorn, Cougar, Grizzly, Growler, and Quicksilver recreational starting blocks are great cost-efficient solutions ideal for beginners and pools with large water drafts. They are constructed of low-density polyethylene material resistant to chemicals with UV inhibitors to resist discoloration, fading, and cracking over time.

All of our recreational blocks are compliant with World Aquatics, USA, NCAA Swimming, and the NFHS (excluding the Quicksilver).

Choosing the right starting block for your facility all comes down to how you plan on using it. If you need to meet swimming regulations and ensure compliance, then a competitive block is the way to go. On the other hand, if you have a practice facility or don't necessarily need to follow swimming regulations, a non-competitive block could be a great option for you. Ultimately, the decision is yours to make based on your specific needs and requirements.
