Frequently Asked Questions
Starting Block FAQs
Spectrum Aquatics offers both American-made Stainless Steel single post and dual post swim starting platforms. These come in a range of models, including:
Spectrum Aquatics starting blocks are known for:
-
Non-slip surfaces: Both stainless steel (with grit overlay) and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) options are available, ensuring secure footing.
-
Durability: They are designed to withstand harsh pool environments, resisting discoloration, fading, and cracking.
-
Customization: Options include unlimited colors, custom logos, and powder coating in various finishes.
-
Compliance: The platforms meet World Aquatics, USA Swimming, NCAA, and NFHS regulations (excluding the Quicksilver model).
-
Easy installation and removal: This is facilitated by features like the patented anti-wobble design on single post anchors and the Expansion Post Anchor system for dual post platforms.
Both options offer exceptional non-slip properties. Stainless steel tops are coated with a grit overlay for enhanced traction. Plastic tops, made from LDPE, exceed industry standards for non-slip surfaces and are particularly suitable for facilities that frequently remove and store platforms due to their lightweight and durable nature.
Among all the starting block options available, there are two distinct types: Competitive and Recreational. Competitive and Recreational blocks differ in both design and functionality, and we are here to assist you in determining the best fit for your facility. You can read all about the difference between the two in our blog, Competitive vs. Recreational Starting Blocks.
The ongoing debate over whether "single post blocks are superior" or "dual post blocks offer greater stability" is irrelevant because it is based on your personal preference. You can read all about it here: Which Is Better?
Yes, Spectrum Aquatics offers extensive customization options, including unlimited color choices, custom logo placement, and powder coating in any RAL color and various finishes. This allows you to create starting blocks that perfectly complement your pool's aesthetics and branding. Our extensive and exceptional powder coating process, along with the highest quality American-made stainless steel and expert welding techniques result in a finish, more durable, and brighter than the rest. Our powder coating is available in all RAL colors and a variety of finishes.
The Expansion Post Anchoring System is a patented innovation that allows for the easy installation of new platforms into existing dual post anchors. The platform legs expand within the anchors, eliminating the need for anchor wedges and providing a secure fit.
The Backstroke Start Device helps swimmers achieve a more powerful and efficient backstroke start. It features a non-slip wedge that attaches to the pool wall, providing a stable surface for the swimmer's feet. The Backstroke Start Device with an Automatic Retraction model automatically retracts after use, while the Stationary Backstroke Start Wedge provides a cost-effective option for training.
Regular cleaning is crucial for ensuring the longevity of your starting blocks and minimizing rust formation. The frequency depends on the pool environment. Additionally, Spectrum Aquatics offers resurfacing for non-slip surfaces and powder coating to keep your platforms looking new. ADA-Compliant Pool Chair Lift FAQs
The 2010 ADA Standards mandate that all public pools and spas must have an ADA-compliant means of access. This typically means installing either a ramp or a pool lift.
Key features of an ADA-compliant pool lift include:

Yes, Spectrum's standard rails are designed to comply with the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design. However, it's crucial to ensure proper installation and spacing for ADA compliance, as outlined in the Federal ADA Accessibility Law.
Spectrum Aquatics employs a unique 3-Step Process to enhance the durability of their stainless steel products. This process involves:
- Electropolishing: This removes surface impurities and creates a smooth, highly polished finish.
- Passivation: A citric acid bath forms a protective oxide layer on the steel, increasing its corrosion resistance.
- Spectra Shield™ Coating: This final coating further enhances corrosion protection and ensures long-lasting performance.

Ballast Systems are available on the Discovery, Marshall, and Mendota.
Pool Covers and Reels FAQs
Pool covers are the single most effective way to reduce pool heating costs, saving you 50% to 70% on energy bills. They prevent water evaporation, which is the primary source of energy loss in pools. By keeping the water in your pool, you'll use less energy to replenish and reheat it. Other benefits to covering a swimming pool:
-
Chemical consumption will also be reduced, providing approximately $5,000 - $7,000 savings annually.
-
Make up water will be reduced by 30% - 50%.
-
The building interior will experience less wear and tear. Fixtures, windowsills, paint, beams, and exposed metals will all last longer in a less corrosive environment.
-
Heating bills will be lower, and HVAC equipment will experience less strain.
This brochure highlights three main types of pool covers:
-
Energy-Saving Hemmed Thermal Pool Covers: These covers are designed for optimal insulation and have various warranty options (3, 5, and 6 years). They are made from heavy-duty, UV-protected material for long-lasting performance and hemmed together at the seams.
-
Energy-Saving Welded Thermal Pool Covers: Fully welded, energy-saving, thermal commercial pool covers are specifically designed for the harshest pool environments. These unique 7-layer pool covers are completely mold and mildew-resistant, UV-protected, and 3x stronger than other brands. These are the only fully welded commercial pool covers on the market and are made in the USA by a highly skilled manufacturing department in Missoula, Montana.
-
Spa Sheets & Custom Edged Covers: Available in both unedged sheets for customization and pre-edged options, these covers provide the same energy-saving benefits for spas.
Pool covers are often not used daily because they can be heavy and cumbersome when deploying and retracting. Spectrum Aquatics has designed semi-automatic wall-mounted Reel systems like the Blackfoot III to solve this problem.
The brochure presents several storage solutions, including:
-
Bitterroot Series Deck Storage System: This system offers various sizes to accommodate different pool sizes and cover weights. All the Bitterroot options are hand-cranked reel systems stored on the pool deck. Covers are available.
-
Blackfoot Wall-Mounted Storage Systems: These systems are available in manual (Blackfoot I) and semi-automatic (Blackfoot III) options, saving deck space and offering easy cover deployment and retrieval. Remote control for easier access is available.
The Portable Power Winder is an add-on for existing pool cover reel systems. It automates the process of deploying and retracting your pool cover, making it faster and easier, and helps to ensure daily pool cover use.
Welded pool covers offer some unique advantages:
-
No Panel Separation: The welding process prevents the panels from separating, ensuring a secure and long-lasting cover.
-
Water Resistance: They are designed to not absorb water, preventing sagging and making them lighter and easier to handle.
